History

For generations, the alpine terrain around Aspen Meadows was home to pioneer cabins established under the Federal Homestead Act of 1862. Early settlers in Iron County’s upper mountain regions included families like the Burtons, Lymans, and Adamses. By 1906, the area was incorporated into Dixie National Park, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became known as “Little Ireland,” named after the Irish Adams family, who used the land for dairying and grazing.

In the mid-20th century, visitors from Cedar City and Parowan fondly recalled feeding horses named “Prince” and “Ranger” near the entrance pastures off Old State Highway 143. The area also hosted logging operations and a cheese factory. For the past 60 years, the land has been privately owned, with each Brian Head Resort ownership group envisioning its potential for recreation and ski expansion. Locals still remember “Burt’s Road to Nowhere,” now Aspen Meadows Drive, named after resort pioneer Burt Nichols.

Vision

Established in 2022, Aspen Meadows is renowned for its open alpine spaces, mature aspen and fir stands, and high-altitude ski terrain. Positioned near Brian Head Resort and Cedar Breaks National Monument, its north- and northwest-facing slopes offer ideal conditions for skiing and snow retention. Aspen Meadows serves as a prime basecamp for exploring Utah’s “Mighty 5” National Parks and outdoor activities year-round.

Future plans include ski lift and trail expansions, resort connectivity, increased snowmaking, and public hiking and biking trails, pending approvals. Managed growth emphasizes sustainable design, preserving open spaces, and creating vibrant communities with ski-in, ski-out homes, luxury residences, townhomes, and eco-mountain cabins.

SUSTAINABILITY

Aspen Meadows prioritizes sustainable development through careful management of on-site natural resources, aligning with its core value, “Aspen Meadows – Of the Mountain.” Using locally sourced materials like stone, rock, topsoil, and wood from tree harvesting reduces energy and transportation costs while minimizing landfill waste.

These resources are repurposed into construction materials such as sand, gravel, road base, and wood chips for infrastructure and land restoration. Best practices include reclaiming topsoil, grinding trees for revegetation, and operating stone pits for aggregates used in utilities, roads, and landscaping. This approach ensures thoughtful, low-impact development and sustainable land use throughout the project.
